It was bound to happen. With all it's sugary sweetness, my art was bound to take a little detour into darker waters. I knew it would happen eventually but I did not expect it to turn so soon.
Current project: Creating my own tarot deck
Current sources of inspiration:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - The plot is ok...but the circus descriptions and imageries are amazing.
Charmaine Olivia - Love her or hate her, the girl is committed. She truly embodies her art. Her entire appearance, persona, lifestyle, environment and paintings are all rolled up into one witchy, gothic, otherworldly aesthetic. I'm starting to wonder if she is cleverly doing that on purpose.
Edward Gorey - The best example I've found of tongue in cheek macabre art. I LOVE how he manages to walk that fine line between funny/devious/innocent/twisted...basically all the things I'm striving for right now.
Edward Scissorhands soundtrack - And a couple others from Danny Elfman. The perfect arting background music.
So, watch out...Lisa's venturing into a new, gloomier genre. And as with most things I get really excited about, I'm going into this full-assed (as opposed to the half-assedness I save for things like mopping the floors). Which means I need to do my research. Which means I need books. Which means I order things like the encyclopedia on the occult.
It's a little early...but really it's not because Valentine's Day stuff is already replacing all the Christmas stuff on store shelves. [insert sad face]
And I think all this Valentine propaganda is working because I woke up this morning with Valentine's Day thoughts infiltrating and squatting in my mind.
So, in an act of defiance...and because, despite what they claim, Hallmark doesn't have a card for every occasion...here are a few quickly sketched out Valentine's Day sentiments you might need in your arsenal.
*What I neglected to capture in this photo was The University of Texas flag waving boldly in the snow. Go Longhorns! (In actuality, I have just about...zero school spirit. My real purpose in photographing this house was less the alumni pride and more the cutesy, cozy, rustic cuddliness of the house.)
**Note the tarot cards. Uh oh, Lisa's art may soon be taking a bit of a dark turn!?!?!
*Back in the old days of midterms, study sessions, 6th street adventures and dining hall dinners, I used to keep my AIM profile updated with my daily happy/pissy status. In an effort to update this blog more than I've been, I'm bringing it back, baby!
